If you have recently had cause to investigate the prices for travel across our country via either train or plane, you may well have been very shocked over the difference in prices. The fact is that while air travel remains relatively competitively priced, train prices have increased exponentially.
If we take an example of a trip between Newcastle and Plymouth, if you were to rely upon UK flights you may well be able to secure a fare in the region of around £70.00 return. Conversely, if you think the train is going to take the strain, think again! It is highly unlikely that you will be able to secure a fare as low as this.
In fact, having investigated these fares myself, I discovered that for longer journeys in the UK, train fares are on a par with what you could expect to pay to fly across the Atlantic. If you leave your booking to the last minute, especially, you can expect to pay many hundreds of pounds.
Then, of course, you have the time considerations. A train journey between Plymouth and Newcastle (going back to our earlier example) may well take around 7 hours. On the other hand, a flight may well only take just over an hour.
Goodness only knows how these extortionate train companies have managed to get away with charging such ridiculous fares for so long. My advice would be to boycott the railways and fly instead. If the Government are not happy with us all clocking up the air miles, they will have to do something about the rates the train companies are ripping us off with - simple!
